NEW PAMA WEB SITE AND LOGO

Have you noticed our fresh new look? The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Marketing Association (PAMA) has launched a contemporary look that reflects the values of our organization. Lindsay Goldthwaite, member and graphic designer, created a fresh design that shows the professional yet fun “personality” of PAMA. The new design focuses on our theme of “making connections.” It is the goal of PAMA to help marketing professionals make connections with each other, make connections between industry trends and their own companies’ needs, and make connections with the surrounding community.

To make connections even easier, PAMA has also debuted a new website. We hope you agree that the site not only reflects a more contemporary personality, but offers our members a simpler way to connect with PAMA. Bookmark this site, or use the RSS feed to keep informed about marketing happenings in the Greater Delaware Valley. Best of all our key partners and sponsors will be highlighted so that you can have access to many of the resources you need.

This year’s Smackdown pits Brand vs. Beauty in an all-out debate you won’t want to miss! We’ll watch selected commercials from Super Bowl XLII, and listen as a panel of local Philly marketing experts debate branding, creative and overall audience impact. This is our 6th annual Smackdown, so expect new faces, a new stage, and a new format, but we’ll still have the banter and wit you’ve come to expect from our no-holds-barred marketing event.

This is an evening to hear what branding, advertising and corporate marketing experts think of the year’s hottest commercials – from the most strategic to the most outrageous. Our panel promises to deliver a humorous look at the year’s most-watched marketing – and maybe even some well-deserved criticism.

This is Philly AMA’s premier event of the year – come out for all the action on the marketing gridiron! Learn more and register today!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: LESLY ATTARIAN, VICE PRESIDENT EXTERNAL AFFAIRS, PLEASE TOUCH MUSEUM

This month, we caught up with Philadelphia AMA member Lesly Attarian. Lesly is the Vice President for External Affairs at the Please Touch Museum where she is responsible for membership, PR, media, reservations, graphics, web design and advertising. With a staff of 6, her job is to get people to visit the museum. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Radio, Television and Film from Temple University. We’ve asked Lesly to share a bit about what she does and how AMA has helped her through her career.

What do you like most about marketing or are most passionate about?

Being the brand champion for the Please Touch Museum.

How do you derive personal satisfaction from what you do?

I derive satisfaction from the Mission Statement at the Museum, “enriching the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play.”

Working in a non-profit I have been able to meet interesting people and create unique partnerships such as those with Sesame Place and CHOP. Our partnership with CHOP has allowed us to provide free visits to families so they can escape the hospital for awhile and just play with their children.

Another thing that brings me satisfaction is accomplishing great things on a tight budget and creating a wonderful team oriented work environment. I also enjoy reaching out to a variety of audiences and networking, networking, networking!

Briefly describe your path to success.

I have been at the Please Touch Museum for 15 years; since I graduated from college. I started as a development assistant and has always had a passion for marketing and PR.

My path to success has also created a path of success for the museum. Founded in 1976 and now over 30 years old, the museum has outgrown our current location. The museum is set to open in the new location at Memorial Hall in October 2008. Memorial Hall is a National Historic Landmark and is undergoing a major renovation to get ready to receive more than 400,000 annual visitors. The new space will be three times larger than our existing location

Is there any information that you want to share from your personal life that you feel has contributed to your success?

I am passionate about her job and the Please Touch Museum. I have truly found a job that matches my beliefs. I feel that you should believe in what you do and play by the rules to achieve success.

How has your membership with the Philly AMA assisted you in your career path?

The AMA has provided me with the opportunity to network and continue life long learning from colleagues. You can always learn something new and the AMA has given her that opportunity over the years.

What are some of your interests?

Issue related things such as the environment. Sports, College basketball (Temple Owls)

What’s next for you?

Opening the Please Touch Museum in its new location next fall! In addition, I would like to take the skills I have learned as a true leader of change and apply it to her local community as well as the city of Philadelphia.

What advice would you give to our younger members aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

-Think about what you are doing and the affect it has on others.

-Be respectful.

-Connections are vital to career development.

-Do what you like, not just for a pay check.

-Enjoy life and pay it forward.

-Do what people have done for you, such as becoming a mentor to those in college or just out of college even if you have only a little experience, someone younger than you could always use some guidance.

OCTOBER EVENT SUMMARY

Web 2.0 sure has become a buzz word in the marketing industry. But specialty technology consulting advertising agency (or whatever you’d like to call them) Molecular has delivered forward-thinking strategies that harness the new interactive tools and grow brands like Ernst & Young and Yankee Candles in the new media arena.

Anne Lac and Raphael Chun are two senior user experience architects with very different backgrounds that have led them both to the same place: helping clients and customers to develop a tailored, creative strategy and effective tactics for their brand in cyberspace.

Lac and Chun shared the many advances of the web, citing examples of social networking, with sites like Linked In for business contacts and Yelp.com for user generated referrals and content, as well as the proliferation of web video and virtual reality in Second Life. Marketers are always hoping to find the best way to integrate these emerging trends into plans and campaigns, and surely these presenters opened attendees’ minds to the variety and scope of all that is achievable in the online world.
